Have you ever engineered and built a wind powered boat? Well youth attending Buncombe County’s Neighborhood Energy Saver Program sponsored by Progress Energy had an opportunity to do just that. Buncombe County 4-H hosted the “Great 4-H Wind Boat Race” on Saturday, August 13th at Emma Elementary. While their parents were learning about the Energy Saver Program, approximately 70 youth were in the gym building and designing wind boats while learning about wind as an alternative energy.
Each team was given a box of supplies which they could use to build their boat.
Once all of the teams had completed their boats, they lined them up and raced them across the gym floor powered by a large fan.
Ribbons were awarded to teams whose boats travelled the farthest and fastest.
