2011 4-H Citizenship Focus

Madison Baldwin of the Lucky Clovers 4-H Club and Holly Jordan, Buncombe County 4-H Agent, spent this week in Raleigh for the North Carolina 4-H Citizenship Focus program where they learned about the state government, state budgets, appropriate etiquette, how to advocate, and how to develop an action plan for improving our local community.  Up to two youth from each county are invited to attend this event which was held at the Sheraton Hotel in Raleigh and is cosponsored by North Carolina 4-H and North Carolina’s Electric Cooperatives.

As part of this exciting opportunity, 4-H members attended various workshops, had dinner and a tour of the North Carolina History Museum, participated in an “NC Spin” session with a panel of representatives who spoke about and answered questions of 4-H members about current issues affecting North Carolina residents, attended a Legislative breakfast with our local state representatives, and visited the Legislative offices to meet with our Buncombe County Legislators and Senators.

We want to send a special thanks to Representative Pasty Keever who spent a good part of Wednesday morning talking with Madison about her role as a Legislator and how she represents her local constituents.  As part of the responsibility of attending the conference, Madison has developed an action plan to promote local foods in her high school.  We’ll keep you posted on the results!!
