2009 Jersey and Holstein Junior Milk Production Contests

The Holstein and Jersey dairy cattle breed associations in North Carolina sponsor a recognition program for any 4-H or FFA youth ages 9-19 as of January 1, 2009 who own registered dairy cattle that have produced superior production records in their respective breeds. Any active North Carolina 4-H or FFA member is eligible to participate.

The cow must be owned by the junior member when the lactation under consideration was initiated and remain in his or her name until the 305 day lactation is complete. Records submitted must have been completed during the immediate past DHIA testing year, which began October 1, 2008 and ended September 30, 2009 with the exception of the Jersey breed (see below). Only official 305 day DHIA or DHIR records will be considered. Records will be adjusted to twice daily milking (2x), mature equivalent (M.E.) basis. The junior member with the highest producing cow in the contest will be honored by their respective breed association at their annual meeting and will receive an engraved plaque.

Holstein Junior Members:  According to the NC Holstein Jr. Milk Production contest rules, any 4-H or FFA member who is a junior member of the National Holstein Association by September 30 of the current year is eligible to participate. The junior member must have owned the animal when she freshened with her first calf. Please click here to download the Holstein entry form.

Jersey Junior Members:  The NC Jersey Breeders Association follows the National Jersey Youth Production Contest rules so that state winners can enter directly in the national contest. Only those records completed between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2009 will be eligible for this competition.

Entry forms should be sent to: Dr. Brinton Hopkins, Extension Dairy Specialist, Box 7621, Department of Animal Science, NC State University, Raleigh, NC 27695-7621.  Entries must be received by Monday, January 4, 2010.  Please also contact Dr. Brinton Hopkins with any additional questions (919.515.7592 or Brinton_Hopkins@ncsu.edu).
