NC Operation Military Kids Visual Arts Contest

NC Operation Military Kids (OMK) is excited to announce the 5th Annual NC Operation: Military Kids Visual Arts Contest. The contest is open to all North Carolina youth. Age categories are 5-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-15, and 16-19. Designed to introduce youth to the Visual Arts as a part of the 4-H Expressive Arts Curriculum, youth will utilize their skills and their artistry to capture their views of America and patriotism.

This year’s themes are:
- Love of the USA
- All American Kids
- Spirit of Patriotism
- Military Life
- Honoring Our Heroes

Eligibility of Photos: All photographs must have been taken by youth between the dates of May 1, 2011 and the time of entry. Photos may be submitted only one time and in only one division and class to the North Carolina Operation: Military Kids photography contest.

Entry Deadline: ENTRIES must arrive in the North Carolina 4-H Youth Development Office, postmarked no later than Monday, April 30, 2012.

What a great opportunity for all North Carolina youth to showcase their talent and skills in the Expressive Arts area!

2012 West District Teen Retreat

Mark your calendars and save the date!! Get ready to have some 4-H fun with other teens (13-19 years old) from the West District! Our West District 4-H Teen Retreat will take place Friday, March 30- Saturday, March 31, 2012 at the Swannanoa 4-H Camping Center right here in Buncombe County.

Teen retreat includes lots of fun activities including leadership workshops, county skits, spirit stick competitions and a dance.

Specific information regarding the cost, times, etc will be posted on the blog soon. Check back in the next few weeks for more information!!

Swannanoa 4-H Summer Day Camps

Think it’s too early to begin thinking about what you are going to do this summer? It’s not and Swannanoa 4-H Camp has something that you might just like!

Stay close to home but have that rustic camp experience this summer at the Swannanoa 4-H Camping Center’s day camping program. Day camps run from Monday through Friday each week during the summer. 4-H camp offers all kinds of activities that will keep you busy all day long. You’ll be able to swim, test your skills at archery, climb the climbing tower, and much more!

Each week of camp will focus on a different theme including:

June 4-8th – Animal Instincts
June 11-15 – Wild West
June 18-22 – Stream Ecology
June 25-29 – Mad Scientist
July 2-6 – Insects
July 9-13 – Solar System
July 16-20 – International
July 23-27 – Forestry
July 30- Aug 3 – CSI
August 6-10 – Under the Sea

REMINDER: West District 4-H Ski Night

Join your fellow 4-H members of the West District for a night of fun on the ski slopes. Our annual West District 4-H Ski night will take place on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at Cataloochee Ski Resort in Maggie Valley. 4-H Members, family, and friends are welcome to attend!

Where: Cataloochee Ski Resort (1080 Ski Lodge Road, Maggie Valley)

Times: Registration will take place from 3:30-6:00 p.m. Once you check in, you can ski until 10:00 p.m.

Cost: $20 Lift Ticket
$26 Ski Rental & Lift Ticket
$35 Snowboard & Lift Ticket

Buncombe 4-H Robotics Team Competes at State Contest

We want to congratulate the members of the Buncombe County “Robots R Us” 4-H team for their participation in the State FIRST Lego League tournament in Greensboro, NC on Saturday, January 21st. This was the very first year of our new 4-H Robotics program and we are incredibly proud of the accomplishments of the team members and coaches! Now that the competition season is over, the team will have a much deserved break until it’s time to begin plans for next year. We are looking for pictures of your 4-H activities during 2011 to be used in our “year in review” video which will be shown at our annual 4-H Achievement program on February 16th. If you have pictures that highlight 4-H club meetings, fund-raisers, community service, project work, fun events or just funny candid shots, please email those to Holly Jordan at holly_jordan@ncsu.edu. Holly will need your photos by February 1st to be included in the video.

New 2012 4-H County Council Officers

We would like to congratulate our new 2012 4-H County Council officers who were elected at our December council meeting. These new officers will be inducted into their new positions at our upcoming 4-H Achievement Program which is being held on February 16, 2012. As council officers, they will be helping to plan county-wide 4-H events and will be representing our 4-H program at various events during the year.
